Emigrating to Mallorca
An increasing number of Dutch people are choosing to move permanently to Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. The combination of a sunny climate, a relaxed lifestyle, and stunning natural surroundings attracts around a thousand new residents each year. While Mallorca is, of course, known as a popular holiday destination, we are also seeing that, just like Ibiza, it is increasingly being chosen as a permanent place to live. This trend applies not only to entrepreneurs and digital nomads, but also to retirees and families.
Why do people want to live in Mallorca?
The reasons for emigrating are, of course, varied. But generally, they often relate to the desire for more peace, space, sunshine, and a better quality of life. Here are the top 10 reasons why people move to Mallorca:

Top 10 reasons to move to Mallorca
- Sunny climate. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, life becomes healthier and more active.
- Beautiful nature. From idyllic sandy beaches to mountain landscapes, Mallorca is a paradise for nature lovers.
- Better quality of life. The Spanish, and more specifically Mediterranean, lifestyle is often less hectic than in the Netherlands.
- Health and well-being. Outdoor living, fresher food, and reduced stress contribute to improved physical and mental health.
- Lower tax rates. Especially appealing for entrepreneurs and retirees, Mallorca offers a more favorable fiscal climate.
- Ideal for families. With many excellent international schools, Mallorca is a family-friendly island.
- Remote work friendly. More and more Dutch professionals work remotely and choose sunny locations like Mallorca as their base.
- Easy to reach. With direct flights from several Dutch cities, friends and family are never far away.
- Real estate investment. Mallorca remains a popular location for buying second homes or investment properties.

How to emigrate without stress?
Families, entrepreneurs, couples chasing their dream, or retirees looking to enjoy the sun — we've helped them all make the move to Mallorca. And you know what we often hear? "We didn’t expect there to be so much paperwork." Because yes, emigrating to a Spanish island is a bit different from moving to mainland Spain.
Think about arranging sea freight for your household belongings, registering with local authorities, dealing with taxes, and mountains of administration you might not have considered beforehand. But don’t worry, we handle the entire moving process for you. With one dedicated point of contact who takes care of everything from door to door. All you need to do is pack your sunglasses and flip-flops.
To take into account...
Living in Mallorca is an incredible step, but it does require slightly different preparation than moving to mainland Spain. So, what should you keep in mind?
- Overseas relocation.Your household belongings need to be shipped to the island, meaning everything will be packed into a container and delivered by sea. Luckily, we have the right partners both here and on Mallorca to handle it all smoothly.
- Slower bureaucracy on the islands . Administrative processes can take longer on the Spanish islands. Be sure to apply for your NIE number (Spanish tax ID) well in advance, along with your local registration (empadronamiento) and social security (Seguridad Social).
- Bringing or buying a car? What will you do? Shipping a car to the island is more expensive than transporting it overland. And buying a car on Mallorca is often pricier than on the mainland. It’s something worth considering—especially if you plan to register your car with Spanish license plates, which involves its own process.
- Taxes are different. While you pay taxes in Spain just like on the mainland, certain rules—such as the tourist tax or property ownership regulations—can differ in the Balearic Islands. We highly recommend consulting a reliable gestor (local tax advisor or administrative consultant).
