How to emigrate without stress?
Preparation is key for everything. Engage multiple specialists who can help take care of you and your family’s needs. This will help you avoid much of the stress. Organizing everything will take significantly more time than with a domestic move. Portuguese bureaucracy is entirely different from what you’re used to in the Netherlands. Paperwork, as in other Southern European countries, can take much longer than expected. Think, for instance, of dealing with the local municipality or applying for your NIF number. Tip: Start your preparations well in advance!

- The Azores have special tax rules. Although the archipelago is part of the Republic of Portugal and therefore also part of the European Union, these islands are exempt from VAT. This provides a significant advantage in your moving costs! The Azores have a special status within the European Community, which grants this benefit.
- It’s also helpful to know that you don’t need a passport to travel to the Azores—your ID card is sufficient.
