Emigrating to the USA
The United States and the dream of living ‘The American Dream’ continues to inspire many Dutch people. This has been the case for decades, and despite today’s uncertain world, we haven’t seen that change. From vibrant cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Miami to the country’s vast natural landscapes, America continues to attract.
Despite the complex immigration process, following President Trump’s re-election, the U.S. remains a popular destination for those seeking a new life abroad. Each year, thousands of Dutch nationals apply for the DV lottery (Diversity Visa Program) or try to find a path through work or family connections.
Why do people choose this country?
Many are drawn by the sense of freedom, while entrepreneurs are especially motivated by the strong business climate and drive to succeed. The American mindset of “anything is possible” speaks to a lot of people. We've helped many clients relocate who were eager to build a successful career or start a new venture. So, what’s your reason? We’ve put together a list of 10 common reasons we hear from people moving to the U.S.:

To take into account...
Donald Trump is back as president and has taken a tough stance on immigration. This has consequences for legal migration to the U.S. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:
- Stricter procedures and controls. Visa requirements have tightened: work visas like the H-1B are now under increased scrutiny, with a stronger focus on protecting American jobs.
- More background checks. Especially for family reunification and green card applicants, the screening process is more thorough.
- Fewer DV lottery green cards. The Diversity Visa lottery has become more limited.
- Possible immigration system changes. Your education, work experience, and English proficiency may carry more weight than family ties. You will need to demonstrate how you contribute to the country.
- Marriage-based migration is still possible.
Visa options:
- Work visas (H-1B, L-1, O-1)
- Study visas (F-1): Student visas are relatively easy to obtain, but authorities closely monitor whether students return to their home country after graduation.
- Investor visa (E-2): If you have the funds and are willing to invest at least $100,000 in a U.S. business, this is your path.
- Green card through marriage or family: However, expect longer waiting times and stricter screening.
