Canary Islands
Emigrating to the Canary Islands
This Spanish archipelago is not only a popular vacation destination but is also increasingly chosen by those who decide to permanently leave the Netherlands for the Spanish sun. The Canary Islands are an autonomous community within Spain. This means that not only are the relocation regulations different, but taxes, for example, are also unique. In short, there’s plenty of essential information to optimally prepare you for emigration. Ready to take the trip?
Why do people choose for Gran Canaria?
The subtropical climate with favorable year-round temperatures is a major reason why many choose to move to one of these eight islands. What's your reason for relocating? We’ll give you ten reasons to move to this autonomous part of Spain:
10 reasons to move to these Spanish islands
- The subtropical climate with pleasant temperatures all year round.
- Living in a paradise outside Europe, but still part of Europe.
- Excellent flight connections with the Netherlands and mainland Spain.
- The cost of living is lower than in Spain (on land), partly because VAT on things like fuel is also lower.
- The relaxed lifestyle and atmosphere that pervades the islands.
- Many self-employed professionals who can work remotely are leaving the Netherlands.
- Retirees are increasingly choosing the Canary Islands.
- A paradise for water sports enthusiasts.
- The Spanish food and drink culture is amazing.
- A great base for entrepreneurs focusing on Africa. Significant investments are being made by companies, and Tenerife, for example, is seen as Europe’s launching pad to emerging African nations.

How to emigrate without stress?
Families, retirees, entrepreneurs—we’ve had the pleasure of moving them all to this Spanish archipelago. And you know what we’ve noticed? They often didn’t realize just how much bureaucracy is involved in an overseas emigration. Once again, emigration to the Canary Islands is entirely different than to mainland Spain. Just think about importing your belongings, an overseas move instead of overland, taxes, and paperwork. We’re happy to manage the entire moving process for you with a dedicated contact person. From door to door, from start to finish.
To take into account...
These are the documents you’ll need to register with a municipality in the Canary Islands:
- Registration form (available from your local municipality)
- Copy of passport or ID
- Your NIE number (Foreigner Identification Number in Spain)
- Copy of rental or purchase contract
- Proof of residence, such as a gas, water, or electricity bill
Also, remember to arrange health insurance. Are you employed? Then you’re automatically covered through the Seguridad Social, with your employer also paying your health premium. Make sure to check if you have standard health insurance, which is comparable to the Dutch basic insurance and usually covers you at the Centro de Salud (outpatient care) in your area. It’s recommended to also consider private health insurance. This offers more options and often shorter wait times by giving you access to a variety of healthcare providers.
The Canary Islands have special customs rules. Although the islands are part of Spain, they do not belong to the EU in customs terms. This gives them a special status, which is beneficial for you as an emigrant! You don’t have to pay 21% VAT on moving and transport costs.
