Emigrating to Italy
Are you drawn to the stunning Tuscan landscape, the rugged south, or are you more of a city person with a preference for Milan or Rome? Whatever you choose, Benvenuto in Italia! But beware: are you truly ready for La Dolce Vita? Emigrating involves a lot more than it seems. And we're not just talking about all the arrangements for your current home in the Netherlands; there’s also paperwork to handle in Italy. That’s why, as a global relocation specialist, we’re here to make your move easier. Read along with us?
Why do people choose La Dolce Vita?
Italy: the land of warm culture, fresh pasta, and sprawling vineyards. And we haven’t even mentioned the beautiful language. “Buongiorno, un caffè, per favore.” Can you already imagine yourself sitting on a terrace every morning? Based on experiences from our own clients, here are ten reasons to move to Italy:
10 reasons to move to Italy
- The Mediterranean climate is far better than in the Netherlands.
- The cost of living is significantly lower than in Northern European countries.
- The Housing prices are much more favorable.
- People have an open and warm personality, and the family-centered approach creates a better work-life balance.
- Healthcare is top-notch. Public healthcare, known as the servizio sanitario nazionale (SSN), is accessible to everyone.
- Nature abounds—from the landscapes of Tuscany to 250 beaches and the mountains in the Alps and Dolomites. Italy is incredibly diverse.
- Children receive more encouragement in school than in the Netherlands.
- Dining out is a way of life and connection. Will you choose an Osteria, Trattoria, or Ristorante?
- Depending on the location, Italy is generally less densely populated than the Netherlands, offering more space and tranquility for less cost.

Emigrating without stress
First of all, prepare very thoroughly! Bring in several specialists to relieve you and your family of stress. Arranging everything will take more time than it would if you were moving within the Netherlands. Italian bureaucracy is very different from Dutch bureaucracy. Paperwork can take longer, and as a Dutch person, you might find yourself amazed by how things operate there. So, our tip is to start your preparations early.
Every day, we handle international relocations, and we quickly recognize the common challenges people face. Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions. We’ll gladly handle the entire moving process for you—from door to door.
To take into account...
Don't forget to...
- Apply for a codice fiscale immediately. Go to the L’ Agenzia delle Entrate with your passport to request your tax number. With this number, you can apply for and purchase all kinds of things, like opening a bank account.
- Register with the local municipality as residenza or domicilio. You’re a resident if you’re fully emigrating to Italy. Domicilio applies if you have a second home in Italy.
- Remember that anyone paying taxes in Italy is entitled to free public healthcare through theservizio sanitario nazionale'(SSN). Of course, you also have the option to purchase private health insurance in Italy.
Finally (and trust us), here are the most important tips!
- Eat pasta with a fork.
- Only order cappuccino before 11:00 am.
- Spaghetti Bolognese doesn’t exist; Bolognese sauce is served with tagliatelle or lasagna.
- Never ask for a pizza with pineapple 😉
