Emigrating to Switzerland
More and more people are taking this step, despite the fact that the country is not part of the European Union. This means that there are additional rules attached to emigration. In short, a bit more bureaucracy. But hey, the high standard of living and the stunning nature more than make up for this, right?
Why moving to this country?
Mountains, waterfalls, caves and valleys. This country is very popular with hikers, mountaineers and skiers. It's no coincidence that many nature lovers choose to emigrate to this country. Even in summer, the temperatures are often still pleasant for long walks. And did you know that Switzerland has the cleanest air in the world? For this reason, we have already been able to move several lung patients, for example. Before we'd like to hear your reason, let's take a look at the top 10 reasons:
10 reasons to move to Switzerland
- Stunning nature with clean air.
- Switzerland has an extremely high standard of living in general. The downside is that groceries and insurance are also much more expensive.
- Job change. There are many opportunities for expats.
- Thriving economy with high salaries.
- Fantastic infrastructure, the public transport in particular is very good.
- Very low crime rates. The country is incredibly safe and has a strong security system.
- The healthcare is one of the best in Europe. As in the Netherlands, there is a compulsory insurance.
- The Swiss government invests a lot in education.
- Everything is neat, orderly and well organized.
- The best cheese fondue in the world. Okay, that's a joke. At least they do have the most delicious cheese fondue, but that's not a reason to emigrate. Or is it for you?

Emigrating without stress
Fortunately, the bureaucracy in Switzerland is of a high level. They love everything to be well organized. As you could read earlier, however, Switzerland is not part of the EU. This means that there are some extra hurdles to overcome. We advise you to gather information in a timely manner. Because let's face it, you want to move without too much stress, right? We hope the following points can already point you in the right direction, but please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We'll answer them without obligation and will also be happy to take care of the entire moving process for you. From door to door, without stress.
Residence permit
As an EU citizen, you need a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) to live in Switzerland if you stay longer than three months.
Importing your household goods:
For the move of your belongings, it's useful to know that your household items can be imported into Switzerland tax-free under certain conditions:
- your household items must be declared in Switzerland within two years of arrival;
- household goods are exempt from import duties if you have owned them for at least six months and have used them for their intended purpose.
Sometimes it is not possible to meet these conditions. Fortunately, it is still possible to clear your household goods. There are often slightly higher costs involved, but fortunately the amount is often quite reasonable. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
What documents do you need?
To clear your household goods in a timely manner, we ask you for several documents well before your move:
- Copy of passport
- Copy of residence permit;
- Copy of rental or purchase contract of the property in Switzerland;
- English inventory list (this will be drawn up by the movers)
For requesting an exemption for household goods, the customs authorities are entitled to ask for a number of documents, such as an employment contract and a confirmation of departure from the Netherlands from your 'old' municipality.
Opening a Swiss bank account
Tip! Open a Swiss bank account. Switzerland has its own currency and a thriving economy. By opening a bank account, you will not be disadvantaged by exchange rate fluctuations and you will benefit from a very stable currency. To get you started: here's a short step-by-step plan.
Select a bank
Compare the different providers and make the choice that best suits your needs. When making a choice, you need to take into account things like bank charges, bank reputation, how much needs to be deposited at minimum, and how other customers experience the bank's service (reviews).
Get in touch
After comparing banks, it's time to get in touch with the bank. The easiest way is to do this online, but a phone call or physical visit is of course also possible. Look closely at the options, as with many banks you have to arrange everything online as standard.
Provide personal information and documents
To open a bank account, the bank often asks you to provide a number of documents. Of course, this is usually a valid ID or a copy of your passport. However, the bank also wants to know where your monthly income comes from.
Fill in the application form
Filling in the application form is simple. You fill in your own details and indicate which type of account you want to open.
Make the first deposit
After the bank's approval, you can make the first deposit. The amount of this deposit depends on the bank and the type of account you are going to use.
Verify the account
At the moment the bank has received and processed your deposit, the bank will inform you about the account details and how you can log in. You will also receive the correct usernames and passwords.
